Mission Statement–

Tony Osio is a painter and photographer of wide-ranging interests – instinctive in approach, yet tied to classical discipline; all-embracing in his outward choice of subjects, yet guided by a leitmotif that makes him an artist with an edge.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, of Mexican parentage, his work reflects his Roman Catholic upbringing. Through surface allegory and symbols, Osio creates a subconscious world of erotic angst and bewilderment, paradoxically infused with his ironic sense of humor, which enables him to express the conflicts stemming from the restraints of his background. Osio considers himself to be independent of the current “isms,” preferring instead to follow his inner compass, to experiment with style as well as materials, pushing his work beyond the comfort zone. The resulting intensity – both thematically and dynamically through choice of color – creates a visceral connection between the painting or photograph and the observer. Vibrantly expressionistic, filled with tension and innuendo, Osio’s works never hide the pleasure he takes in the kinetic act of creation.

Most recently, as a result of a long-term fascination with the universal, ever-evolving, organic beauty of the worn and weathered objects and landscapes of this world, a concept embodied in the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, Osio is increasingly focusing his attention upon the paradox of the value inherent in such imperfection. As has been true throughout his career, where this road will take him is exciting, but uncertain and elusive of definition. To paraphrase Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, one cannot ever say of him or his work “that they are this or they are that.”
